The sensor has a soft magnetic measurement layer system (4), and at least one hard magnetic layer system, constituting an artificial antiferromagnetic reference layer system (2), with at least one reference layer (10). The reference layer system has a section comprising at least one bias layer system (7) with at least one ferromagnetic layer (26), whereby the magnetic moment of the bias layer system and the reference layer are opposingly coupled by a coupling layer (9). The ferromagnetic layer is made of an alloy of a transition metal and a rare earth metal.
