The method involves feeding fuel (2) to the traveling grate (5) from at least one fuel bunker (1) and burning it with oxygen fed in as appropriate to fire a boiler (4). The traveling grate is cooled by subjecting it to water or water vapor. At least an inner side of the traveling grate is subjected to water vapor from inside to outside for cooling.
