Catalyst for selective liquid- or gas-phase oxidation of hydrocarbons and other compounds comprises non-metallic/inorganic fiber (or woven mat), e.g. borosilicate glass, fused silica or mineral fiber, with a catalytic surface coating of various metals (e.g. chromium, nickel, platinum etc.) formed by known techniques such as impregnation or physical vapor deposition. A catalyst for the selective liquid- or gas-phase oxidation of hydrocarbons (e.g. alkanes or alkenes), alcohols, carbonyl compounds and carbon monoxide comprises non-metallic/inorganic fibers or woven fiber mat (e.g. borosilicate glass, fused silica or mineral fibers) with a catalytically active surface coating of titanium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, copper, nickel, silver, gold, palladium, platinum, rhodium, tin and/or zinc and/or their compounds, formed by known sol-gel, impregnation, chemical vapor deposition or physical vapor deposition techniques.
