In road construction the outer limits of the highway are defined by a kerb stone aligned with the edge of the load-bearing aggregate. The top asphalt layer is esp. separated from the kerb stone by a seal which is rock wool as defined by German Industrial Standard DIN 18166 application type TK (footstep noise dampening).
