PUBLICATION NR.69 The Venemo Asphalt-Faced Rock-Fill Dam - Laboratory Tests on Asphaltic Concrete for an Impervious Membrane on the Venemo Rock-Fill Dam

The paper describes the design and construction of the Venemo Dam, a dam with an impervious frontal facing of asphaltic concrete and a fill consisting of tun¬nel spoil. Compaction field tests on tunnel spoil were carried out and the compression of the rock fill was measured by means of cross arms installed in the fill. A description of the construction of the dam and of the asphalting is given together with the results of quality control. The performance of the dam after one year in service is checked by measurements of the seepage through the dam as well as of the compression of the fill.nThe article concerns tests made on asphaltic concrete to be used for the upstream membrane of the 60-m high rock-fill Venemo Dam. The tests consisted of the determination of the permeability of asphaltic concrete to water and bitumen, compression tests, slope tests and tests which aim at determining the effects of waves, ice and solar radiation. The tests show that, in order to obtain an asphaltic concrete which satisfies the demands for impermeability and durability, the concrete should have an air porosity of less than 3-4%.
