The machine, designed to produce packages with interlocking closure strips, incorporates a mechanism (110) which makes a fold (P) in the film (12) to create at least one pleat in each finished package. The fold (P) can be made along or across the film layer, and the package closure strips can also be in either direction. The pleat in each package can be in the form of a Z-section fold in the film itself or a U-section insert welded into it. In the former case the fold can be made by two parallel plates (112, 114) with an adjustable amount of overlap.
