A method for plasma cutting along a predefined cutting trajectory (TRC) in a work piece (PT) using a cutting torch (TC) delivering a plasma jet involves the automatic adaptation of the characteristics of the plasma jet to maintain the torch at an essentially constant distance from the work piece by: (a) modulation of the thermal energy brought to the work piece as a function of cutting speed variation by adjusting the mean intensity or effective intensity of the cutting current; (b) modulation of the kinetic energy of the plasma jet as a function of cutting speed variation and/or as a function of the adjustment of the mean intensity or effective intensity of the cutting current; and (c) modulation of the plasma arc voltage as a function of the variation of cutting speed, mean intensity or effective intensity of cutting current or the pressure of the plasmagenic gas. An Independent claim is also included for an automatic plasma cutting installation by this process.
