PURPOSE: Provided is a photocatalytic titanium dioxide supported on silica gel, which exhibits superior photoactivity over conventional photocatalyst, so it is suitable for the application to the photochemical treatment of dye wastewater and the decomposition of recalcitrant compounds. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of (a) mixing 1.0 to 2.5 M titanium (IV) isopropoxide with alcohol while stirring with a magnetic stirrer in non-oxidizing atmosphere, thereby producing solution A; (b) mixing distilled water with strong acid, thereby producing solution B with a pH range of from 1 to 3; (c) producing suspension solution by dropping the solution A into the solution B for 0.5 to 1 hr at 4 deg.C or less; (d) producing TiO2 sol by heating the suspension solution to a temperature of from 70 to 95 deg.C in non oxidizing atmosphere under reflux for 4 to 8 hrs; (e) producing silica gel suspension by adding silica gel in distilled water in the amount of 10 to 20 % by weight, followed by stirring for 30 min; (f) introducing the TiO2 sol into the silica gel suspension, thereby producing silica gel suspension impregnated with TiO2; (g) eliminating solvent from the silica gel suspension impregnated with TiO2 with a rotary evaporator at 40 to 80 deg.C; (h) removing moisture form the silica gel impregnated with TiO2; and (i) calcining the silica gel impregnated with TiO2 at 400 to 500 deg.C for 5 hrs, thereby eliminating residual byproducts and unreacted organics.
