An element or an alloy with a low melting point is used as the heat transfer medium. Alternatively granules or powder, particularly fine metal powder, transmit heat from a heater(24) to a flowing material being processed. When heated the heat transfer material is fluid and is introduced into a free space(25) near the machine area to be heated while in this state. Oxygen is excluded from the free space which is completely filled by the material during use. The metal-filled free space is completely sealed by caps(26,27) after filling. Areas to be heated are enclosed in insulation(30), in particular ceramic fibers. An Independent claim is included for a machine for processing plastic, metal or rubber with a closed heating area(25) incorporating the claimed heat transfer material.
