An X-ray detector (1) comprises a scintillator (2) for converting the X-rays into light, and a sensor (6) for detecting the light. The scintillator is arranged so the spectrum of the light produced depends on the energy spectrum of the X-rays. The sensor can detect spectral information. The scintillator has a number of different layers (3, 4, 5) which send out different frequency light. Photo diodes (7, 8, 9) are located under the scintillator layers.
