Length (22) of the flow channels (20, 26, 27) is less than the length of the filter element (11). Cross section (25) of each flow channel decreases from the inlet maximum to virtually zero at the other end, between the inlet and outlet boundary surfaces (17, 18) of the filter element. Inlet and outlet channel areas on each side of the filter material are complementary at any given cross section. The filter element is wound in rings, channels being formed by spacers on either side of the filter element strip. These spacers may be pressed and folded from the filter material itself. Intervening separator rings are in the same material as the filter strips or are impermeable to air. Further configurations, details and variants of the construction are described, in accordance with the foregoing principles. Pressed cross sections of the filter strip have approximately rectangular form. Fine and coarse filter elements may be combined in the same unit. Adhesive bonding construction is described.
