A first sensor (FS) detects a motor vehicle's internal combustion engine's (ICE) cooling water temperature. A second sensor (SS) detects a temperature assigned to the ICE. First and second differences are calculated between a temperature detected by the FS and SS if the ICE stops in a prior operating cycle (OC) and a temperature detected by the FS and the SS when the ICE starts in a current OC. An independent claim is also included for a method for diagnosing faults in a first sensor for detecting a motor vehicle's internal combustion engine's cooling water temperature.
