The method involves automatically activating an internal combustion engine (100) based on operating parameters and/or environmental parameters of a motor vehicle and/or the internal combustion engine or based on actuation signals. The engine is operated in a predetermined operating mode. The engine is stopped again, when a predetermined temperature is reached in interior of the motor vehicle, and/or a coolant temperature threshold is exceeded and/or preset time period is exceeded or drive operation of vehicle begins.
