The assembly (10) has a pneumatic spring (16) with cylindrical body (12), a linear electric motor (14) next to it, and a piston (28) inside the body, which reacts to actuation of the motor. The body has a closed end (15) with fastener (17), and a plug (18) at the other end, which has a bore (20) for the piston rod (22). The motor has a set of coils (26) around the spring body, and there is a magnet pack (32) located on the piston. To drive the pneumatic spring, a magnetic field is generated around the spring body, and this drives the magnet pack. The magnetic field is reversed to reverse direction of movement of the piston.
