Device for hardening contours on a surface of a hardenable material, such as steel, comprises a heat source for locally heating a region on the surface and control units (4) coupled to the heat source. The control units are programmed, so that heat is fed to a region on the surface in front of a starting point of the contour. The speed and amount of heat introduced are selected, so that each part of the contour is heated for a short time to a first predetermined temperature.
