Polythiophenes are in the form of organic materials for the manufacture of electronic components of interest; known manufacturing process, however, lead to contamination by metal - and halide ions, which is not reproducible properties to electronic components produced therefrom lead. It should therefore be a process for their removal are provided.The method according to the invention comprises the steps of: (a) treating polythiophene with an organometallic compound in an inert solvent and subsequent isolation of the thus treated polythiophene; (b) dissolving the in the step (a) polythiophene obtained in a water-soluble organic solvent and intimately contacting the solution thus obtained (organic phase) with an aqueous solution of a metal ion complexing by means of (aqueous phase); (c) separating the aqueous and the organic phase and isolating the high-purity, ion-free polythiophene from the organic phase.According to the invention, a highly pure, ion-free polythiophene with a total content of halogens of less than 100 ppm and a total content of metal ions of less than 20 ppm is made available.The polythiophenes according to the invention are suitable for the production of an electronic component with reproducible properties.
