Production of modified particles, a carrier or a catalyst component for addition polymerization involves preparing a product by contacting a Group 13 element compound (I) (e.g. trialkyl aluminum) with a Group 15 or 16 element compound (II) (e.g. alcohol), then contacting the product with a Group 15 or 16 element compound (III) (e.g. water) in presence of particles. Production of modified particles, a carrier or a catalyst component for addition polymerization involves preparing a product by contacting a Group 13 element compound of formula M 1(L 1) 3(I) with a Group 15 or 16 element compound of formula (R 1) t-TH (II), then contacting the product with a Group 15 or 16 element compound of formula (R 2) t-2-TH 2(III) in presence of particles. M 1Group 13 element; L 1H, hydrocarbyl or halo; R 1electron withdrawing residue or group containing an electron withdrawing residue; R 2optionally halogenated hydrocarbyl; T : non-metallic Group 15 or 16 element; and t : valency of T (i.e. 2 or 3). Independent claims are included for: (1) the preparation of an addition polymerization catalyst (APC1), by contacting modified particles (A) obtained by the above process with a transition metal compound (B) and optionally an organo-aluminum compound (C); (2) the preparation of a prepolymerized catalyst component (PPCC) or catalyst (PPC) for addition polymerization, by preparing a primary catalyst by contacting (A) with (B) and optionally (C), then prepolymerizing an olefin in presence of the primary catalyst; (3) the preparation of an addition polymerization catalyst (APC2), by contacting the above PPCC with (C); and (4) the production of an addition polymer, by polymerization of appropriate monomer(s) in presence of APC1, APC2 or PPC as catalyst.
