The towing bar (1) has a stabilizing ball coupling (4) comprising a spherical surface (6) which fits on coupling ball of the tow vehicle and a stabilizing device in form of a friction element which cooperates with the coupling ball so as to dampen sway movements of the towing bar. A monitoring device is provided for controlling damping produced by the stabilizing device. The monitoring device includes a measuring device (9) in the region of the towing bar (1) for determining damping forces or damping moments. A visual/acoustic warning device (13) outputs a signal when the damping exceeds a predetermined value.
