When goods are being collated to fulfil a given order they are loaded onto trays and then onto a pallet which has an attached a RFID tag memory device. Each of the goods has a product description/pricing barcode (46) and possibly a display until date on its packaging. Each tray also has a bar code or RFID tag describing the goods in the tray. When a completed the pallet is presented to a first station having reading (22) and writing (20) devices A user is then prompted via screen (21) to scan the bar code on the goods and enter the date life. The tray end labels are also scanned and checked from consistency. The writing device checks that the good have the correct date and codes to fulfil a given order via cross reference to a database (60). The user then enters the despatch date. The product codes date life and supplier code is then written to the RFID on the pallet. The RFID memory tag of the pallet is then read at the point of despatch to ensure that the goods comply with the requirement of the order.
