PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a literature information retrieval system with a synonym retrieval device for properly retrieving synonyms. PSOLUTION: A relevant word storage area 343 of table structure storing a plurality of pieces of word relevant information is established. The relevant word storage area is formed by associating, with word information, relevant word group information having a plurality of pieces of relevant word information of words located in the vicinity of the word concerned in a sentence of a literature, which are associated with the word and characterize the word. When acquisition of retrieval request information from a terminal device is recognized, similarities are computed on the basis of the weight degree for the identity of relevant word information of the word relevant information corresponding to a keyword acquired from the retrieval request information, and word relevant information with the similar relevant word group information is retrieved from the relevant word storage area 343 and narrowed on the basis of the literature frequency, and selected word information is taken as a synonym.
