PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly practical gas-permeable material having excellent gas permeability and having mechanical properties, and to provide its production method.;SOLUTION: The gas-permeable material is obtained by compounding carbon and metal in such a manner that the carbon content is controlled to 10 to 90 vol%, and in which pores are formed in the grain boundaries between the carbon and metal or in voids between the carbon and carbon, the leakage of helium is ≥1×10-11Pa×m3/sec, and bending strength is ≥10 MPa.
