The preferred embodiment of the present inventionoperates on a system of interconnected gaming machines. In anormal operation mode, the individual machines provide awardsto individual players based on the generation of symbolcombinations in a first group of symbol combinations. Thelinked gaming machines are polled by a feature controller todetermine whether symbol combinations in a second group ofcombinations are generated. These symbol combinations in thesecond group of combinations are accumulated until a level isreached such that a bonus award will be given to the nextplayer whose machine generates a symbol combination withinsaid second group of symbol combinations. The first machineto generate a winning symbol combination within said secondgroup of symbol combinations is given a bonus award. Thefeature is then reset. The status of the feature is displayedfor all players of the linked gaming machines.
