A simple and cost effective system for powering hoists in remote sites, e.g. for offshore installations, has a power module (3, 4) included in each load (2) and connected to the hoist drive, e.g. winch, fitted to the installation. The hoist can be a lifting arm (1) operated by a pulley system. The hoist is secured by locking bolts when not in use.
