The method involves irradiating a surface area of a cylinder head (10), which is to be treated, with an energy rich laser beam. The surface area is heated by temporary operation of the laser beam passing above its melting temperature, and cooled by discharging heat into an adjacent material layers. The laser beam is guided into a moving grid across the surface, and effected in an inert gas atmosphere.
