A method for preparing a security document has a chip and associated components such as an antenna, incorporated into laminating layers applied to the document. The laminations can be applied to the spine of a book, with plastic and fibre layers in a sandwich to prevent access to the chip without destroying the structure. The front and rear covers, as well as the spine of the document provide mounting sites for the laminations. The fibre layers can be additional sewn into the structure.
