The method involves sensing a sensing device (28) with an optical sensor (30) for measuring workpieces, and activating the sensing device (28) for lateral oscillation. Contact of the workpieces is sensed by the sensing device. Oscillation amplitude of the device is observed with approximation of the device to the workpiece, and a sensing position is determined during standstill of the device.
