The method involves stopping injection of fuel in air inlet ducts (a, b) and/or in a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. Mass of air admitted and present in the combustion chamber is reduced previously or simultaneously during the stopping of fuel injection, at a given time of an engine cycle, during stopping of the engine. The air inlet duct and an exhaust gas recycling duct are closed during stopping of the engine. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle (B) utilization of a method for stopping a diesel engine.
