The heat exchanger has a closed volume (29) filled with a heat transfer fluid e.g. methane and sodium, capable of changing state by circulating inside the volume. A calandria (15) allows passage of recycled exhaust gas to the interior of the exchanger such that the gas releases its heat to the fluid. A coolant (26) is in heat exchange contact with the fluid. The calandria has twisted tubes (20) inside which the exhaust gas circulates.
