The charger has current sensors (10, 11) which are provided for secondary windings (13, 14) in a secondary side of a transformer (6). The sensors are connected with an evaluation unit (12) for transmitting signals, that correspond to a current value such as actual voltage value. The evaluation unit is formed to control a synchronous rectifier (7) and to switch off switching units in the zero crossing. The sensors detect the current flow through the secondary windings of the transformer in real time. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method of operating a battery charger (2) a current transformer consisting of a housing with a core and a coil wounded at a part of the core.
