The invention relates to an aqueous colloidal dispersion based on at least one compound of a lanthanide and of a complexing agent having a pK (cologarithm of the dissociation constant of the complex formed by the complexing agent and the lanthanide cation) greater than 2, 5. This dispersion can also comprise a compound of at least one element chosen from groups IVa, Va, VIa, VIIa, VIII, Ib and IIb of the periodic table. The process for preparing the dispersion starts from an aqueous mixture comprising at least one salt of the lanthanide, a salt of an aforementioned element if necessary, and the complexing agent; a base is then added to the mixture thus formed and the mixture is heated, whereby the dispersion is obtained. The dispersion can be used on a substrate as an anticorrosion agent, in a cosmetic composition, in catalysis, in the preparation of films of polymers, in lubrication or in ceramics.
