Within the framework of the development of a SAW gas sensor for nerve agents,three lanthanide complexes were tested with sarin, dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP) and some interferents. In some cases the responses were partly irreversible as a result of the catalytic effect of the chemical interface on reactions taking place at the sensor surface. The best suited lanthanide complexes yielded a detection limit of 0.7 ppm GB (3.5 mg cu. m) with an 80% response time of five minutes. The results are discussed in terms of strategies for designing suitable chemical interfaces for organophosphorus compounds.
