A programmablemultimedia controller, including audioand video switches, controls audio video,telephony, data, security, motor-operated,relay-operated, and/or other types ofdevices. Modules of the controller receiveand output audio and video in a numberof analog and digital formats, allowingthe system to be interconnected to awide range of devices. Small form factorgeneral purpose personal computersmay be operatively connected to provideprocessing power for the system, and toexecute application programs. Further,a personal DVD player, or anotherdevice capable of displaying data andgenerating an audio output in responseto user selection, may be used to controlthe programmable multimedia controlleras part of embedded control technique.Additionally, a video overlay featurewhich allows video images, still frames,graphics, and/or text to be overlaid at anydesired location of a display screen, isprovided in some embodiments.
