The invention relates to printing, publishing and multiplying engineering. The inventive method consists in converting an initial two-dimensional picture tone signal consisting of multilevel tone signal values of areas (3) of the original into a two-dimensional screen copy signal consisting of two-level tone values of printed and spacing elements thereof. For this purpose, two types of two-dimensional signals of the element weighting values are formed. In the first type, the weighting values are distributed between the elements in an order independent of the tone modification behaviour along the areas of the original, whereas in the second type, the geometry of outlines thereof in taken into account. The two-level screen copy tone signal is formed by setting the values thereof according to the result of comparison between the signal values of the areas of the original and the weighting values of the first and second types. The second type values are placed inside space intervals-segments, whose position is determined by forming an outline path signal (2) and the borders (1) of segments are set according to the number of neighbouring elements which are used for reproducing the screen copy outlines. Said invention makes it possible to improve the processing small details of the image by more efficiently using the initial signal information and a resolving power of printing.
