The invention relates to the application of a microporous carbon adsorbent material originating from the calcination of poly(vinylidene chloride-co-vinyl chloride) (PVDC-PVC), poly(vinylidene chloride-co-methyl acrylate) (PVDC-AM), poly(vinylidene chloride-co-acrylonitrile) (PVDC-ACN), poly(methyl acrylate-co-acrylonitrile) (AM-ACN) and other related copolymers known generically as Saran, for the selective adsorption of paraffins having between 5 and 10 carbon atoms (C5 to C10), particularly linear, mono-branched and multi-branched paraffins contained in gasoline cuts. According to the invention, the above-mentioned separation depends on the adsorption properties of the components in accordance with chain length and the number of branches. The microporous carbon adsorbent material has improved characteristics in terms of adsorption capacity and selectivity in order to separate the alkanes in accordance with chain length and the number of branches in comparison with commercially-used zeolitic molecular sieves. Owing to the use of the microporous carbon adsorbent material, the separation process can be carried out in liquid phase or in gas phase and requires an adsorption separation unit. The adsorption process can be performed by means of changes in pressure (ACP) or changes in temperature (ACT). In addition, the process can be implemented in any adsorption system using fixed beds, agitated beds, moving beds, simulated moving beds, etc. The process for the regeneration of the microporous carbon adsorbent material can be carried out through desorption by means of changes in pressure (DCP) or temperature (DCT) or displacement by a desorber.
