An envelope comprising at least two parallel layers (1a, 1b) of flat material which are folded about a folding line (2), wherein the envelope is closed on all side edges and is delimited rectilinearly on two side edges (3a, 3b), the layers have an adhesive bonding region on the two side edges (3c, 3d) which lie opposite the rectilinear side edges, and at least one of these side edges is profiled, is characterized in that the two adhesive bonding regions extend continuously in parallel to the respective side edge and in a contiguous, L-shaped region (4), the one limb (4a) of which adjoins the folding line in parallel, and in that the other limb (4b) has an adhesive bonding region which does not reach as far as the side edge (3c), with the result that a transport strip (5) which extends in parallel to the adhesive bonding region remains free from adhesive on this side edge before the envelope is folded. As a result, the envelope can be profiled on any desired side edge or on two side edges which adjoin one another at a corner, without an adhesive-free hole being produced in one of the adhesive bonding regions.
