The invention relates to a method for protecting vehicle gearboxes, in particular hydrostatic-mechanical torque division gearboxes against overloads consisting in calculating a gearbox loading by a gear controller and in limiting the engine power on the basis of the thus calculated loading when a damage of the gearbox can be expected or when the gearbox load exceeds a threshold value.
