The item (1) has a protective function against biological and chemical toxicant and noxiant materials e.g. chemical warfare agent such as vesicatory mustard gas. A measuring appliance (2) captures one measurable quantity e.g. temperature, that influences or characterizes the serviceability of the item via a physical or chemical measurable quantity. The appliance comprises a physical, chemical or biochemical sensor e.g. temperature-sensor, responding to the capture of the quantity by inducing or exhibiting a measurement signal induced by a physical, chemical or biochemical reaction. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method of using a measuring appliance (2) a process for determining a serviceability of a nuclear, biological and chemical protective apparel item.
