Method involves detection of the error conditions and emitting of the error messages by many control units (6). The vehicle has a central position observation unit (1) which detects position variables during the vehicle operation and stores a vehicle position data (5a), for a time interval of defined length reaching up to current time, in a central past events memory (2). The vehicle position is detected by control unit and an error message is emitted. The fault description and time-stamp and, if necessary, data regarding the fault type is provided to the originator. The fault description and the read-out vehicle position data are transferred to a central fault memory in which the data is so filed that the vehicle position data and the fault description are assignable.
