The method involves automatic detection of fault of functional components (3) i.e. electronic stability program-control device, of a motor vehicle (100) using a fault detection unit (2) of a motor vehicle. Momentary geographical position of the vehicle is detected in an automatic manner. Information i.e. short message service, that comprises faults and geographical position of the vehicle are transmitted to an evaluation unit (10) i.e. electronic data processing-system, outside the vehicle, where the geographical position of the vehicle are recorded using a global positioning system. An independent claim is also included for a fault diagnosis system for use in the motor vehicle.
