The method involves raising a signaling of a failure of a motor vehicle component by changing of driving torque of the vehicle. The signaling is produced by the component over an operation control, which automatically exhibits the malfunction. The malfunction can be directly assigned to the faulty working component. A controlled changing of a retarder-braking torque is accomplished during existence of the failure of the retarder system.
