The method involves detecting operating data (D) of a mechanical component e.g. engine, of a motor vehicle, and determining a parameter for a state of the component based on the data. The component is monitored continuously based on the parameter and an imminent malfunction of the component is determined based on the parameter. The component is controlled, and a momentary load of the component is reduced or limited. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for monitoring a mechanical component of a motor vehicle.
