The method involves forming a signal impulse, so that impulse corresponds to a signal impulse. The formed impulses are supplied at a closed end of a reference signal transmission line (36), which is frequency mismatched at a far end. The reflected signal impulse portions are detected at the closed end. Performance parameter of the line is determined based on the reflected signal impulse portion. An independent claim is also included for a pulse former with a time domain equalizer and a filter.
