Aid for calculating the approximate amount of bone cement required to anchor a femoral shaft prosthesis uses a mathematical formula, alone or in conjunction with a measuring cylinder, to calculate the volume from standard X-ray plates. An independent claim is included for a method for calculating the approximate amount of bone cement required to anchor a femoral shaft prosthesis in which the volume of the prosthesis is determined by immersing it in a measuring cylinder filled with Ringer's solution or physiological saline. The amount of cement required is 10 -15%, especially 20% of the volume for conventional orthograde filing and 25 -60, especially 40%, for retrograde filling.
