Air (4) is heated and supplied to a filter element (1) until a desired degree of drying has been achieved. Air supply is continued until the layer of adherent, wet dirt particles has reached the required dryness. Hot air passes in counter-flow through the element. The air is pulsed, to knock off the dried layer of dirt particles (2). A valve (15) in the air supply is momentarily closed, then re-opened, to cause pulsation. Filter elements are dried in succession. The drying cycle is operated on a timed basis. Drying and cleaning are carried out as a function of differential pressure. Equipment used includes a heater (10), optionally with a burner (12) or heat exchanger, ahead of the valve (15). A temperature sensor (16) is used for temperature control. A timer is included for the cleaning cycle. An independent claim is included for equipment for carrying out the above process.
