The apparatus has a crash sensor assembly (30) with crash acceleration sensors (32- 36) sensing crash accelerations at a central vehicle location and providing crash acceleration signals. Side-satellite acceleration sensors (40- 48) sense the crash acceleration parallel with a front-to-rear axis of the vehicle and provide the acceleration signals. A controller actuates a multistage actuatable occupant restraining system in response to the central crash acceleration signals and the side-satellite signals. Filters filter the acceleration signals. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling actuation of an actuatable occupant restraining system of a vehicle.
