The occupant classification system (12) has a weight sensor (24) and an accelerometer (26) coupled to a vehicle seat system to respectively produce a weight signal and an acceleration signal. A controller (22) determines an occupant classification based on the weight signal and the acceleration signal by monitoring a frequency domain representing the division of the weight signal with the acceleration signal. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a collision countermeasure system; and (b) an occupant classification method.
