A device for filling vertical tubes with granular material comprises a rope (28) to which transverse baffles (26) are attached. The position of the device in the tube is such that the rope axis is between an outer circle (32) and a concentric inner circle (34) and the baffles extend to the outer circle, the diameter of the inner circle being at least half that of the outer circle. An independent claim is also included for filling a vertical tube with granular material by inserting a device as above into the tube and pouring the granular material into the tube while pulling the device out of the tube.
