A resin containing phosphate groups which is obtained by copolymerizing (a) a polymerizable monomer containing a phosphoric ester group represented by the formula [-OPO(OR)(OH)] (wherein R is a C4-10 hydrocarbon group), (b) a polymerizable monomer containing the phosphate group represented by the formula [-OPO(OH)2], and (c) a polymerizable (meth)acrylic ester monomer having two tertiary alkyl groups per molecule; and a water-based metallic coating composition which contains the phosphate group-containing resin and a metallic pigment.
