The vehicle interior console (9), including a stowage compartment with its opening (91) fitted with a sliding cover (R) made e.g. from a textile material, a plastic panel or slatted shutter, has the cover made with a recessed handle (2) on its upper surface and a projecting handle (51) on the inside. The recessed handle enables the cover to be opened fully with its forward edge inside the compartment, and closed by initially pulling on the inner handle.
