Heretofore electromechanical relays were use for transmission line protection, which had a number of drawbacks such as high burden on instrument transformers, longer operating time, contact problems, and so on. Solid state relays also suffer from inflexibility, duplication efforts, complexity and cost. The present invention aims at overcoming the above drawbacks and provide A novel system for detection and classification of power transmission line faults, which consists of a l00Km transmission line fed with 3-phase power supply at 440 volts and 50Hz with 10 Watts per phase load long with an isolation transformer, characterized in that the said system employs in combination - (a) a switching circuit for analyzing performance at varrying fault inception angle (FIA); (b) a data acquisition card (DAQ) and (c) host computer with a monitor, wherein the real time data acquisition is carried out through data acquisition card serving as a high performance multifunctional analog to digital input/output board for the said host computer.
